Five Strains That Built the Modern Cart: A Vaper's Pilgrimage to the Classics

Walk into any UK vape shop or scroll any cart menu and you'll see the same roll call: Northern Lights, Amnesia Haze, Blue Dream, OG Kush, Gelato. These aren't just flavour names slapped on terpene blends — they're the founding genetics of the entire modern market, strains that earned their reputations decades before anyone thought to bottle them.

If you're vaping a "Northern Lights" cart in 2025, you're tasting an echo of history. So we reckoned it was time for a proper pilgrimage: five legends, their origin stories, and an honest look at what the lab data says versus what the mythology promises.

Northern Lights: The Quiet Legend

Born in the Pacific Northwest in the late 70s and made famous in Amsterdam's Sensi Seed Bank, Northern Lights is basically the godfather of indica genetics. Nearly every "relaxing" strain on the market has it lurking somewhere in its family tree.

The mythology: Deep body relaxation, couch-lock, sleep.

The terpene reality: Lab reports on authentic NL consistently show myrcene dominant, with pinene and caryophyllene in support. Myrcene is the compound most associated with that heavy, sedative "indica" feel — so here, the legend and the lab roughly agree. In cart form, expect earthy, piney and faintly sweet. A good NL blend tastes like a forest floor after rain; a bad one tastes like a generic "berry" cart with a name tag.

Amnesia Haze: The Coffeeshop Icon

You cannot tell the story of European cannabis without Amnesia Haze. Bred from Southeast Asian and Jamaican landrace genetics and immortalised by Amsterdam's coffeeshop scene in the 90s, it's the strain an entire generation of British holidaymakers remember (or, given the name, half-remember).

The mythology: Cerebral, energetic, occasionally overwhelming.

The terpene reality: Terpinolene-led profiles — floral, citrusy, almost soapy in a good way — with limonene backing. Terpinolene is rare enough that it's a fingerprint; if a cart labelled "Amnesia" tastes of lemon and incense rather than skunk, that's actually on-brand. The sativa reputation holds up in the aroma, though a terpene blend alone won't replicate the effects — more on that in a second.

OG Kush: The West Coast Export

OG Kush hit California in the early 90s and its exact origins remain one of cannabis's great pub arguments. Chemdawg lineage, Florida folklore, LA hype — whatever the truth, OG built the template for the "gassy, kushy" flavour profile that dominates carts today.

The mythology: Potent, relaxing, with that unmistakable fuel-and-lemon nose.

The terpene reality: Limonene and myrcene up top, heavy caryophyllene underneath. That peppery, diesel-adjacent funk is genuinely distinctive, which is why OG-style blends are the easiest to spot as authentic in a blind sniff test. If your "OG Kush" cart smells like nothing at all, you've been had.

Blue Dream: The People's Strain

A Blueberry crossed with Haze, out of California in the mid-2000s, Blue Dream became the best-selling strain in legal US markets for years on end. It's the crossover hit — approachable enough for beginners, respected enough for heads.

The mythology: Balanced, uplifting, smooth.

The terpene reality: Myrcene-forward but with enough pinene and caryophyllene to keep things interesting. Blueberry sweetness over a herbal Haze backbone. In cart form this is where blends shine, honestly — blueberry terps are well understood and reliably tasty.

Gelato: The New Money

The youngest name on this list, bred in the Bay Area by Cookie Fam in the 2010s, Gelato is the strain that made dessert-flavoured everything the default. Its genetics run through countless "premium" carts on UK shelves today.

The mythology: Sweet, creamy, luxurious.

The terpene reality: Caryophyllene, limonene, and linalool — a peppery-citrus-floral trio that reads as sweet and creamy without a single molecule of actual dessert flavouring. The best Gelato blends are subtle; the worst taste like a birthday cake candle.

Legend vs Lab: The Honest Bit

Here's the thing we always come back to: a terpene blend in a cart recreates flavour, not effects. The entourage of cannabinoids, the grow conditions, the fresh versus cured material — none of that survives the bottling process. When a UK cart says "Amnesia Haze," what you're buying is an authentic-tasting tribute act, not the original band.

That's not a knock. It's just worth knowing what you're paying for. A quality blend from a transparent seller — one that publishes lab results and doesn't hide behind vague marketing — is a perfectly good way to enjoy these legendary profiles. A mystery cart from a petrol station is not.

The classics earned their reputations. The least we can do, as vapers, is know why.
